BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012.

Posted by: Kevin-W on 28 November 2012

Well, the shortlist is out - unusually, we're spoilt for choice this year. Who would you vote for? (Click below).

Personally, I'd go for Wiggo - winning the TDF and a Gold within a week is a pretty awesome achievement.

Laura Davies, Susan Petterson, Yani Tseng.

Is Laura Davies still playing?

Just making conversation. Not really cynical, but I do think that the deification of entertainers has become counter-productive to our general well-being.

Laura Davies still plays pro golf. You didn't mention which tour. If the LPGA then I'll add Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Karrie Webb etc etc. I still think you're cynical.

People have spoken....

Well done Bradley!

On a lighter note,  S.C forgot to thank the americans for not turning up on that particular year...

And I thought Ray Reardon was going to walk it. Well he wouldn't be running would he?

John.

The poll at the start of this thread seems to have been a pretty good predictor, including Andy Murray who nevertheless surprised me at third

Cheers

Will he come up in the new years honours list ?

Lord Wiggo of Wigan sounds good to me.

If Coe can be made a Lord  !!!!

What about the vomit making precursor to Lord "I made a load out of the olympics" Coe award?

John.

Ray's game is now golf. He was captain of Churston Golf Club in Torbay a few years ago.

Sat on the same table as Seb Coe many years ago at Ian Bothams benefit dinner at the Cafe Royal. Beefy was a really nice unpretentious character. Seb Coe, by contrast, was so far up himself he could do his own colonoscopy.

Kevin W, I beg to differ. The award, which started 59 years or so ago,  was originally the Sportsview Personality of the Year, Sportsview being the BBC midweek (Wednesday night) sports programme, usually introduced by David Coleman and/or Peter Dimmock. It changed to Sports Personality when Sportsview bit the dust.

Well London 2012 remains the greatest event I have ever seen ... nothing else has come close. I did go to a Ladies football match and I can name the Great Britain team and most of the current England squad. Women tennis players I can name too and the cricket team?

Sorry I can't name three golfers men or women, but I can now name one thanks to SPOTY - I learned Rory McIlroy is a golfer so the programme was educational as well as entertaining - otherwise it is sport I know nothing about.

I voted for Jess by the way - somebody who is the best in the world across many sports has the edge for me.

Winky, I'm not one for awards ... can never understand why business men get awards and all those acting awards mystify me, but sports folk entertain and make me feel happy so those awards are fine by me. The exception, of course, are England footballers who played this year and apparently lacked motivation ... please click here to hear a song about it  ... £100,000 a match and lacked motivation ....

Anyway voting for Sports Personality is a lot better than that Max Factor thing or whatever it is called on the commercial channels .....
