Streaming from the Internet?
Posted by: Helensq on 29 November 2012
I have recently bought a Unitiqute which I love. However, I would like to be able to stream directly from the Internet so I could listen to catch-up radio or Gramophone magazine samplers for example. Is that possible with some extra kit or software and if so which?
Thanks
Airport express with airplay, assuming you have an iphone/ipad/newish mac
Thanks. That helps and i do have an iPad that i use for n-stream. But it also prompts some further questions:
a) is there an option for streaming to the unitiqute from the internet via my pc rather than my iPad - so I would be less dependent on battery charge for the iPad?
b) how does the interface work? Would I use AirPlay instead of n-stream on my iPad controller when I want to stream music from the Internet? or is it 'behind the scenes' so I could just hit the play button on the relevant website anou hear it from my speakers?
c) I have read forum posts which say it isn't as good a streamer as the Naim - presumably I would still be able to use n-stream and Naim streamer for my stored music?
Sorry if these are nonsense questions - I'm just trying to get my head round it before I commit to any expenditure!
Thanks
Helen
Helensq,
To clarify, are you talking about FM radio or internet radio? If so, those options are in the input menu in n-Stream. I don't think you can stream music sites, such as Pandora. These all require the iPad / iPhone app, so your iPad has to be on. But it does go to sleep, and so uses very little power. I can't imagine that the battery drain would be an issue; the biggest power draw is the screen, so if it is off, then you're using very little power.
But if that is your concern, just use the UQ remote; no i device at all needed. But not nearly as convenient.
Airplay and an airport express will/ should let you stream iTunes radio stations, or your digital files, but I think the sound quality suffers too much.
The Unitiqute will stream from the Internet, including the BBC Radio3 HD stream. You can adjust the channel list using naim.vtuner.com
Helen, I use Asset UPnP server on my PC to feed my NDS. I paid for Asset (about twenty five quid) which opens up the advanced function 'PC sound capture' which means that any sound playing on my PC can be streamed to my NDS. It would be the same with your unitiqute. Ideal for listen again radio. Obviously you can already stream live radio without any of this hassle.
You have to turn PC sound capture on in Asset and then you see it as an option in nstream. If you select it through nstream then your PC and naim streamer are mirrored. I use it to listen again with BBC iPlayer. You have to physically go to your PC and start iPlayer (or whatever) then, bingo, the sound comes out of you hifi. It works well; it's easy to set up and it sounds good.
It might be worth a thought.

Sorry, I can see I've confused things. I can and do stream Internet radio via UQ. What I want is to get music / audio files direct from other websites - eg podcasts that aren't on the Internet radio streams.

Hi Helen,
Surely Spotify (or even iTunes?) was created to achieve what you seek to do. There are not so many tracks that are not in their library.
Thanks gav111n - that works perfectly! I've upgraded my Asset and, hey presto, can hear the Gramophone magazine's preview of this month's reviewed recordings! Just what I wanted.
Along the way I've discovered that the catch-up radio on BBC I-player for radio 3 is available via their Internet radio site, as well as the 'now playing' programmes. But it's not very easy to get to via n-stream.
