Adding streaming to NAIT5 / CD5 system...

Posted by: Andy Too on 29 November 2012

Would anyone care to comment on the wisdom - or not - of adding an ND5 XS to a system currently comprising a ten-year-old NAIT5 and CD5 combination driving Rogers Studio 1a's?

I could buy an ND5 XS and a Flatcap XS for about the same price as a Uniti - and not have to mess about replacing the Stageline into the bargain...

I won't add a ND5XS to your combo

IMO you got 2 options :

Sell the Nait5, keep the CD5, get a UnitiQute 24/96! CD5/Qute is a great combo, I have it at home

Sell the Nait5 and the CD5, get a UnitiLite, you'll get a bit more power, 24/192, and you'll have only one box.

The Qute is a fantastic streamer, I assume, the same must be said of the UnitiLite.

Hi ANdy,

I can definately recommend the ND5XS. It is a fantastic source and will match very well with what you already have. What aim do you have with teh FlatCap ? It can not feed your ND5XS. Is it to feed the Nait ?

Edouard, Iver,

The idea with the Flatcap is to supply both NAIT5 and CD5; my understanding is that the Stageline is still powered from the NAIT5 in that configuration.

Vinyl isn't the most important but - having run the same Pink Triangle turntable for thirty years - I don't want to ditch it now just because Naim have decided to delete the Stageline supply from the current Uniti range!

There are probably lots of alternative routes, but I've avoided upgraditis for the past ten years, and keeping the NAIT5 and CD5 seemed the simplest. And adding the Flatcap might give enough of a performance hike to stop me wondering what the Roger's sound like on the end of a 200...

Actually - is anyone else running BBC-derived speakers like the Rogers?

What are you driving them with?

I'm sorry I ever sold my Nait 5 or CD5. Do not sell them!

Get a Sonos ZP90 for streaming. It's what I added to my CD5/Nait5 system years ago and it is still doing sterling service through 252/300 now.

Nait5 was great, but the Flatcap is a worthwhile upgrade.

Hmm... might be overkill, but will have to try an ND5XS at home...

You could also put a Qute as a streamer source on your CD5/Nait5

You could then decide what to do about keeping the Nait5 or not...

It would be quite cheaper than adding a ND5XS...when I hear what a Qute can do as a source on a 552/300 system, I'm not sure a ND5XS would do a much better job...

BTW I have also a CD5/Qute system

paired with SF Cremona AuditorM, a beautiful system!

I know a Qute should make sense - but somehow buying something and only using half of it seems wrong! A bit like having two tuners in the television as well as two perfectly servicable tuners in the hard disk recorder. Or using split Webers... although that does make for more horsepower so perhaps a bad analogy!
