Free 24 bit sample tracks from Linn until Christmas

Posted by: Claus-Thoegersen on 01 December 2012

Linn Records has created a christmas calendar idea. each day until Christmas there is a new 24 bit track you can download for free. My guess is that you have to download the available track each day, and you have to be a member or create an account.

Don't let me scare you off . . . this could very well be my deficiency!

The album tags for all tracks is Today's free track and then the title. So I tried to rename the tag to Today's free track or rather delete the part after that. Now dtc and n-serve can see the Today's free track album but it is empty.

The upnp server software from Naim, seems to be very good at not liking my tag edits.

The tracks are still there but on 3 albums named Today's free track. If I search for albums named today's 2 of the 3 tracks are found. It seems that the simplest way to create a linn 2012 christmas tracklist is to make a playlist when all tracks are available.

I see the sampling frequency of the Studio Master files variable. So far we have had two at 48kHz, two at 88.2kHz and two at 96kHz. There does not appear to be an agreed standard for this format. There are also two 192kHz files, but in that case the quality standard is clear. If this small sample is anything to rely on, 192kHz quality music is not that common.

You can download as many times you like each day. So when tracks are available in in  192 khz and lower this is a good chance to find out how much better 192 khz files are on your system.

On hdtracks I have seen anything from 24 bit 44 khz or maybe it is 24 bit 48 khz, up to  24 bit 192 khz.

Very few sites have 32 bit downloads available, so who knows  how high labels will go with bitrate and sample rate. Of course the hardware has to be available.

I've now had some time to do some experimentation and have done the following.

Changed The Album Artist Tag to "Linn Christmas Sampler 2012"

Change the album name to "Linn Christmas Sampler 2012"

I use Asset as my UPNP server and normally browse by Album Artist in nStream so I now get the album presented all together but can also browse by artist if I want to find a specific artist and sort that way.

Also when playing a specific track it nicely displays the embedded artwork for the album that relates to the track being played which is nice.

I don't know how the U-Serve works, but if you can browse by Album Artist you can probably achieve a similar result.
