Nait-5i(2) AV mode question

Posted by: Raj Mata on 04 December 2012

Folks,

I have my TV connected to the AV input (via RCA).  Couple of questions:

a) I have to crank up the volume almost to 3 pm to get same levels as my music input (via DAC) which plays fine at 9 pm level? Is this something to do with Uniti Gain (Not sure what that is) and what do i need to do to make the levels the same?

b) Also, the music input seems to play from the AV input when I switch to AV from music- so I hear both music and TV - unless I turn the music source off? Is that by design - would like to change that as well?

Thanks for your advise in advance!!

Raj,

Unity gain should only be set on the AV input if you want the TV to control volume for that input.  It's really designed for integrating an AV processor.  With Unity Gain switched on, the Nait 5i becomes just a power amp, so only try this if the RCA output on your TV is controlled by the TV's volume control.

However, if the output from the RCAs is very low with the AV input on the Nait in normal mode then it may well be that the volume control on your TV does control the output from the RCAs.  Try turning up the volume on your TV to se if that makes a difference.  The reason you're getting noticeable bleed through is because of the huge difference in output between one source and another.  The DAC is probably outputting over 2V by the sound of it.  Some DACs can output up to 3V, which is way too high in my opinion.  Anyway, try increasing the TV volume and see how you go..

Another option might be to connect your TV to your DAC.  Many TVs have a digital output on them these days.  That way you'll have similar levels and it will also have a benefit by isolating the electrically noisy TV from your Nait, which should make the whole system sound better.

Very sound advice Richard! I concur with your diagnosis!
