QNAP / SB Touch Users Beware
Posted by: fatcat on 06 December 2012
Just logged into QNAP admin on my TS-112, noticed there was a firmware update. Installed it to find QPKG centre not only contains SBT server but also Music Station and photo Station.
There is no longer a music library in the SBT server, doesn't exist, confirmed by the SBT device. However my music library is now in Music Station.
I get notification every time I sign on to Qnap admin about version 3.8.0. I have ignored it for the time being. Is this the version you have upgraded to?

I'm running this version in my 219PII, which I keep exclusively for my FLAC files. However the only app I have enabled is the Twonky Media Server (useful for when I am audio editting my LP "rips", as I sometimes find that Asset 'stutters' when I am doing this). I do have the Twonky update installed from QPKG, as I found that it solves the Twonky artwork resolution problem. No problems that I can see.

have exactly the same approach and way of working, and works very fine with me

It's 3.8.0 Build 1114, released on 20th November according to QNAP website.

If you're not using build 1114, doing so in future may result in your Twonky app becoming de-populated.
That.
's the firmware version I've got, and so far no such problem
I would leave 3.8 well alone, if you look around their forum the regulars have basically melted down they are so angry that issues surrounding the betas were ignored.
As promised, I'm reporting back :
QNAP email support crap. They didn't answer the question I asked, and suggested I should swap both hard drives in the 219 and re-initialise. Needless to say, I ignored this and went ahead with the EXPAND option. All worked OK. Each of my 2TB RAID 1 drives held c.1.5TB (I'm doing this upgrade early to save time later on). Took about 12 hours each to rebuld the 4TB drives in HDD1 and HDD2. Incidentally I can now confirm that the left hand drive is HDD1. The bit where you expand capacity after rebuilding the larger drives, took something less than 14 hours. Can't tell you the exact length of time, because I set it going in the evening, and it had finished when I next checked at 11am the following day. All seems well, and available drive size actually reported now as a little over 3.6TB (this is RAID 1, still)
I could still play my tunes while all this was going on!
At the end of the expansion, QNAP finder informed me there was a new upgrade (3.8.1, build 1250 IIRC) availabe to the firmware. So far i've tried 4 times to update this but so far failed. The online upgrades to firmware for the QNAP always seem to me a little flaky, with very slow download then no upgrade carried out, or alternative a fairly fast download (c.10-15 minutes), but failure to upgrade. When I upgraded to 3.8.0, I vaguely remember a similar thing happening before it eventually condescended to upgrade correctly.
I bought a new external 4TB hard drive at the same time as the 4TB internal drives, and the new backup copy of my FLAC files (using SyncBack Pro) is still going on - due to finish tomorrow morning)
I'm still continuing with my "LP rips" using my Korg MR2, but SWMBO has sabotaged me. I'd put one of my two 32GB SDHC cards (with 10 hours worth of recording on it) on top of the NAC52, gone into the kitchen to make a cuppa, and when I came back the card wasn't there, but she'd just closed the curtains (the 52 lives in front of them). She denies moving the card, but I suspect she's brushed it into the cable spaghetti behind the racks (sigh). I've looked long and hard, but don't think I'll see it again until the next time I dismantle the Olive/CB system for cleaning. Just ordered a replacement
card, and have embarked on re-recording the lost 10 hours worth. Women ....
Dungassin, Thanks for reporting back. It really useful and comforting to know that the upgrade and expansion of your raid system went well and that the process works.
I am really surprised that the response from Qnap was not what I have experienced. I suppose that like most customer support situations, it depends on who you get answering you. Not sure about the experience with the firmware upgrade though I tend to leave things alone unless there is new functionality that I want or need. I ignored 3.8.0 and now 3.8.1 is available. However looking around the Qnap user community don't seem to be happy with this one either
No comment on women....
