mac mini digital out and hidef tracks
Posted by: Fozz on 10 December 2012
HI I have the latest mac mini into NDAC via a wireworld supernova.
Recently I have been collecting the free HiDef tracks that Linn are giving away for Christmas.
When playing these on the mac with songbird and enqueue I was expecting the hdef light to illuminate on the NDAC, they are 96KHz tracks 24 bit.
Can anyone advise how best to play these on the mac mini or to tell me how I ensure the tracks are not being down-sampled.
thanks

You have a couple of options. You can go to the Midi sound set-up in the OS and change the bit-rate and word depth. You have to then re-start iTunes.
Or you can download and install the Bit-Perfect App which, amongst other things, automatically changes the bit rate and word depth. It's a great little inexpensive app that runs in the background of iTunes.
ahhhhh I'm not using iTunes winkyincanada, will look at midi options.
Apparently songbird supports hidef tracks. These are FLAC as well.
cheers
ah that's got me to the right setup anyway thanks, looks like the output is fixed to a certain word
size and sample rate and will not adapt per track as needed. anyway good progress.

Good luck with it. If Bit Perfect can alter the settings to do the switching on the fly in response to the track characteristics, then no reason something else can't be found to do the same.
got bitperfect, latest iTunes 11 and mountain lion and you probably guessed it, Fluke does not work anymore to let iTunes import FLAC as reported on the bitperfect website. Apple attempt yet again to force you to their formats or appstore. ;(
given up for now apart from manually switching sample rates in Midi controller

If all you have is a few hi-def files, don't forget the option of USB stick > nDAC.

Well that sucks, man.
I go with the flow with Apple. I just do what they say and move along quietly. (I convert my Flacs in XLD to Apple friendly formats so as not to offend at the walled altar of Appley Goodness. Praise Sir Steve!)
Winky
I've done the same thing. Maybe it's my imagination but I thought there was a drop off from hi Rez file in flac played through songbird vs converting to alac (or aiff. I don't remember) with xld then playing with iTunesiTunes
I'll have a bash at batch converting a few for ALAUGH, the last I tried iTunes it did not sound as good as SongBird but with bitperfect doing the playback things will probably be different. What a mess this digital stuff is in really what a joke.

ah yes, much easier
Amarra playback software plays FLAC files,
H.

Cheers, will investigate. The thing is the bitperfect software does play FLAC files, the issue
is according to their website, is getting iTunes to import and index the FLACs in the first place.
With Fluke not working this is now the hurdle.
great eh
