BBC Sports Personality

Posted by: Calum F on 12 December 2012

I will definitely be avoiding SP12, sitting on my own in the kitchen listening to Planet Rock while my family defers to our Olympic heroes. I fear the worst, with many of the women on the shortlist doing nothing but trying to out-do each other in the fashion stakes and the BBC being totally over the top in it's worship of our sports celebs. There are one or two genuine personalties among those short-listed but the rest I cannot bear to witness. Anyone else joining the boycott ?

Just you and the cat by the looks of it.....

SPOTY used to be an amiable but forgettable TV prog just before Xmas. How/why did it end up being such a media event? It is like the Nobel awards now.

Who honestly cares?

Most sportsmen are vastly rewarded in terms of cash/ego anyway. Do they need this as well?

Well, quite a lot, actually. Quite a few million. And I would imagine that this year even more will watch.

And if you were a sportsman, would you honestly turn this gong down?

In the Olympics year we have a lot to celebrate.

Even as a football fan it will be a pleasure to see our Olympic heroes and heroines recognised whilst our under-achieving and over-paid footballers watch and learn from the sidelines.

Jess Ennis, Mo Farah or Bradley Wiggins for me. Hard to pick a winner. In pure physical terms each was an immense achievement. In the athletics hierarchy Mo's unbelievable blue-riband double in the 5000m and 10,000m trumps the Heptathlon but Jess was our first gold on the big night and everyone loves her for being so determined, down-to-earth and nice. Wiggo, what can you say? The TdF is an immense physical test never won by a Brit and he is a hugely successful Olympian for GB. A good laugh he is too with some great quips.

I admire them all so will enjoy the show and the happy memories.

Mo, tired as hell from the 10,000m, digs deep at the last:

Jess does not need to win this final event of the seven events but she is not about to allow someone else to take the line in front of the home crowd:

Brad taking the mickey out of the French president:

Total heroes and fantastic role models.

Great acheivements all. I would prefer SPOTY to be Sports Review Of The Year and lose the emphasis on the individual vote, which looks to me like apples v pears and therefore rather silly.

I did avoid mentioning the names of the nominees but as you cannot resist, if it is not Andy Murray or Bradley Wiggins the public does not deserve the vote, and why do folks keep calling Jessica Ennis "Jess" when they do not know her personally ?

Murray may fail on the 'personality' bit. I dunno why people call him Andy instead of Andrew.

I will also avoid watching it. Whilst I admire their sporting achievements I regard sitting through several hours of mutual backslapping and dull commentary as a big waste of my life. So there!

Andrew Sachs (Manuel), Andrew Flintoff (aka Freddy) and Andrew Strauss are never referred to as Andy and Andy Murray never Andrew, just one of those things I guess but "Jess" Ennis seems over-familiar to me. Andy Murray is the left-field candidate, not a personality under the normal rules but very strong in his own way.

Another extraordinarily pompous post. What IS the matter with you?

Just listening to Underworld's 'And I Will Kiss' on the excellent Isles of Wonder album. Takes me back to the opening ceremony at the beginning of a wondrous three weeks.

Hats off to Danny Boyle (henceforth I shall call him Dan) for setting the scene. How could he ever follow Beijing we asked. He simply blew it away! So many highlights. The tribute to the NHS just perfect. Well done Dan!

Looking forward to the backslapping on Sunday. I think they all deserve it. Hope they share the gong between Mo, Jess and Brad.

PS Steptoe & Son is available on DVD for those staging boycotts. 'Aaaarold!

Agreed. There are simply too many really good candidates this year and it would be a shame to have to try to split these three into first second and third place.

I think it will come down to a call between Mo and Jess, with Jess taking it due to her greater subsequent exposure on TV.

Cheers

Well, I was wrong. But Bradley is a worthy winner.

I voted for a change. And, for a winner. Well deserved, and something of a 'personality' too. Tony

A well deserved winner in Brad and also in Dave B.

A shared sense of purpose to win has produced stunning results without going to the dark side.

Happy for Bradley and Dave Brailsford. Well deserved.

Simply amazed Mo Farah was not in the top 3 but there you go.

Such a negative start to a thread which became increasingly positive through it's posts!

This really was THE most incredible sporting year for UK and well worth celebrating, looking back and reflecting on - highs and lows.

The BEEB could be accused for trying too hard (as could some of the audience) but how can you/ why would you knock the overall concept?

I was hoping Bradley Wiggins would win - I do believe his victory in the Tour de France was momentous for UK plus then returning to home soil, entertaining us in the road race and grabbing gold in the time trial topped it off marvelously.  It'll never happen again.  He's also got a truck load of charisma which in my book counts in an award like this.

Mo would have been my next candidate for two fantastic victories - the noise of the crowds nearly bringing the stadium down!

Jessica Ennis would have been next - there was something unfortunate about the way she was portrayed as the face of the Olympics, but I suppose someone had to do it and she coped admirably!

Rory is another character who has oodles of charisma, fantastic victories this year - disappointing that he couldn't be a*sed to even show his face at some point - his holiday must have been a good one....

Overseas personality could only have gone one place this year - Mr Bolt has more personality than one human body can cope with!

I was a bit disappointed by the reflective bit on those no longer with us - it seemed too focused on the singer rather than those departed - it's an important part of the show and I hope a bit more balance can be brought to this section in future years.

But miss it?  In 2012?  Are you mad?!!

Peter
