Qnap & Uniti initial set up

Posted by: Ptangyang on 31 December 2012

Hi all.

I'm setting up my Uniti with a Qnap drive (219pii & barracudas). Basic questions:

Where (which folder) should I import music to? Will Uniti see the Music Station folder and is there any benefit of storing it there? Currently I have set up a FLAC folder in Multimedia folder of Web File Manager.

Is there any way I can change tags once on the Nas? All the folders are appearing fine, but lots of file naming protocols were a bit odd so I have multiple track titles of 01, 02, 03s etc

Thank you, i realise this is probably deep noob territory!

Hi Neil,

I have a Synology nas, not Qnap, but some of the basics are the same.  The player (in your case the Uniti) does not see anything that the uPnP server does not send it.  It's all controlled by the server. So you should start with the server that the Qnap runs, and put your music in the folder(s) it wants it in.  I'd recommend reading as much of the info you can on your particular media server, to learn how it works.  Lots of folks end up having issues and blaming the player, when it's really the player only seeing what the server serves (if that makes sense!).

I change tags even after the music is on the nas.  I try to get everything right before moving it to the nas, but sometimes there are little details I miss and only notice when I am viewing the album in nStream.  After the changes, you may have to force the server to re-index the folder that the music is in, so that it picks up the changes.  But this behavior varies from server to server.    I don't worry about the actual file names -- just the track names in the metadata.  So long as the 01, 02's etc. don't show up in the track name info, I don't care if they are in the file names.

Good luck!

stick it in the qmultimedia folder.

i think you can pick a better version of twonky from the qpackages.

thanks both, the twonky manager has helped organise things a bit, the web browser was slow. i didnt realise there were so many other packages out there!
