Qnap 109/209-II latest Twonky version?
Posted by: T38.45 on 31 December 2012
Hi folks,
can you please help me out here?
I'm running Qnap 109-II and 209-II and checked that Twonky has already a version 7 on their web. I checked my versions and it says Twonky 6.0.34.
So is it ok to stay with 6.0.34 or- if not- how can I upgrade to version 7?
Many thanks!
Ralf
Go to QNAP dot com, select Resources, and then select QPKG.
You'll see all of the apps you can download, including Twonky 7.0.9.
Ahhh, thank you Hook!
Have a great 2013!
Ralf
Just tried to upgrade, didn't work,,,,I guess my qnaps are out of date- they are in "archive" system status,,,,
Go into web admin for you QNAP, find Applications, and the latest version of Twonky is somewhere in there in third party stuff IIRC.
What has been changed in 7.0.9? I am still using 6.0.34 and have found nothing wrong with it. I'd rather stay with something that ain't broke rather than upgrade just for the sake of keeping up to date.
Hi Peter,
100% agreed,,,,will stay with 6.0.34 because it works. Just found out that qnap doesn't support newer versions with their packages for older systems.
Hi, I have been using Twonky 6.0.34 on a QNAP NAS and it did some very strange things - wrong album art, tracks in a funny order etc. Nothing too serious but quite frustrating all the same.
Thanks to this Topic, and a bit of fiddling, I have managed to upgrade to the latest Townky version. touch wood, it seems to have fixed the niggles - result.
This is how I did it - Go to the Applications section of the QNAP admin page. I had to disable the "DLNA server" - then go to the "QPKG Centre" tab on the left hand side of the screen. Click the "Available" tab and then "Recommended QPKG" - Twonky should be there somewhere and there should be an install tab (note the "shoulds" - I got there more by luck than judgement!).
I have no idea what any of the above means, but it worked for me. Good luck - and thanks for the original post as it got me on the right track.
Cheers,
Matthew
Hi Matthew,
thank you!
I can not see a "recommended QPKG" section, I see a "QPKG Plugins" only section- when clicking this, I'll get list of available QPKG SW. It started wit QUSBCam... TwonkyMedia6 with version 6.0.34 is listed here. At the bottom, there is a Wed, 30 Mar 2011 hint....so the SW here is very old!
Edit:
3.3.2 is the last Firmware, my model is end of life... that means, 6.0.34 Twonky is the last supported version...
Hi Georg,
happy new year!
Well, this is a long story....short:
I heard the Devialet (it was connected to some big FOCAL speakers) here and I was shocked- after 10 sec listening I ask my dealer for a home demo....did it, bought it.
For me, it's the best amp I ever heard...it beats my Linn Klimax by far...
I do not stream with Devialet, I use it as an amp and DAC for my unitiserve and atv (...the DAC section itself is a killer!)
Main source is LP12 and KDS (will not change this).
Last week, I had the fun to listen to Devialet connected to other speakers:
- B&W (803/804 I hate B&W but...)
- Harbeth (pretty cool!)
- Focal (Utopia 2-way) and some Focal 21k€ speaker.
Same feeling strikes again....B&W 803 with Devialet is my personal audio-heaven (as soon as I get my ministers approval ;-)) I was never green with B&W but with Devialet..well....it's great!
I use Linn Uphorik for phono. The KDS still sounds sublime- I stay with this combi! My old mac-mini with M2tech hiface usb/spdif to Devialet is a fantastic sound machine! If I had to start again, I would go with this setup.
Great! You should listen to NDS as well- a great music machine!!!
Since Twonky 7 has an interesting improvement according to their website:
- Improved support for "Naim Audio Streamer"
Therefore I installed the upgrade. But first I upgraded the QNAP firmware to 3.8.1. The firmware update changes the graphical interface of the QNAP menu. I didn't notice any improvement from the Twonky update yet but it now has an auto update function which I think is okay.
I just refreshed my Twonky page and it now also has a much nicer graphical interface. Best improvement: the option to select "Naim audio streamer" instead of generic media receiver. This makes the album art better in the n-stream app and it also shows the album art while scrolling through the artist/album list.
I'm happy with it.

Hi dickey
I am using an earlier version of Twonky and am pleased with it. The only thing that I miss is the option of searching by "Genre/Composer" for classical music. Is this available in Twonky 7? At present I have to make do with using "Genre/Artist" by entering name of composer under "artist" field. It works but is not as elegant a solution as I'd like.
Regarding artwork display, if I leave my NDS as the default "generic media player" images will be pixelated. Select "Songbook DS" for proper full resolution display. I suspect some other options might also work but just can't be bothered to try them all.
Hi Peter,
I also had the songbook DS setting, but for some reason this was reset again to generic and i didn't know what setting it should be (songbook) so i left it. Now with the specific Naim setting i think everything (so possibly also other things than artwork) is optimal.
As far as I can see there is no possibility to search for composers, but I think this is no limitation of Twonky. When I look at the data that can be filled in for a song, there is no field named "composer". There is a field with "publisher" which you might use for the composer, but Twonky doesn't list that as a search/sort option. I do share your wish because usually you want to listen to music of a composer and not specifically the orchestra that plays it.
Have updated Twonky to 7 after reading this thread - thanks! Looks much nicer but not fixed my playback problems, despite that working from someone else, which are probably to do with not having clicked the compilation tag on compilation albums I think
Linn forums have some good discussions on how to create your own music tree. I dare not try because I have zero knowledge in programming. Just too big a risk if I mess things up!
I installed minim server on my old ARM Qnaps- what a great SW! If you don't like twonky give it a try!
Especially folder view with covers and (!) right track order are fantastic.
Cheers
Ralf
T38.45 according to Qnaps web site twonky 7.0.9 will work with a TS-109 check out link http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=213&t=62028
Sean, thank you! Just upgraded- it works very good!
Ralf
Hi, I am sorry if these are simple questions, but I am new to Naim and streaming.
I have tried to follow the earlier instruction to update my Twonky on my QNAP 212 NAS, but when I try to run the new version it only shows a few albums and these are incorrect when I go into the actual music.
Do I need to re-enable the DLNA Media Server once I have loaded the new Twonky version?
Do I keep both version in the QPKG Centre and simple enable / disable between the two to use one version over the other - I have read somewhere that the new version should be deleted once installed, which doesn't sound right?
And one last one on the art work, there is a comment above to use the Naim Audio Streamer, but I cannot find the tab to change this.
Many thanks
Hi Maxwell
Have you upgraded the firmware on the qnap?
installing the new twonky ver 7 (I assume you was on v6) should over write the old v6.
have you tried rebuilding the twonky database?
sharing, then expand media receivers will show the media receiver type
