What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

On CD

This is a really good album. It is one of a three, CD tribute to the blues standards by Dion.

Bronx In Blue, Son Of Skip James, being the other two. Dion has a marvelous voice for rock and blues. If you like the "old blues" try any of these three albums you will not be disappointed.

A bit varied this morning.

I was listening to the radio on the commute home and they were discussing the Elgar Cello Concerto with Alisa Weilerstein and kept referring to Jacqueline Du Pre, with whom I was unfamiliar.  The interview piqued my curiosity.  As a record shop was on the way home, I just picked this up.  Finally given it a listen and will have to give it a few more.

Further recommendations for Du Pre would be most welcome!

Followed by ...

The Wailin' Jennys - Firecracker

Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself

Memories of listening to the album during night class lessons in the 70's

The Steve Miller Band  "Let Your Hair Down"

This album continues in the same vein as the Dion album with covers of old blues numbers. Although a very familiar choice of blues songs are covered here Steve is on excellent form throughout, putting down some great solos, that sound so reminiscent of his heyday. Some real foot tappin' numbers on here.

Not so virgin nowadays.

On Vinyl

Exciting variety, meticulously crafted and interesting beatscapes and focused, tongue-in cheek rhyming.

Slime and Reason - Roots Manuva

The Pines (LP) [VINYL]

Why? Because it is brilliant!  A seamless amalgam of classic, southern soul, country blues and gospel, this is intelligent music-making with impeccably high standards. Few bands can boast a vocalist of the quality of Yolanda Quartey. A mix of Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples.

I don’t know if you are aware but it is possible to purchase Jacqueline Du Pre’s entire EMI recordings in the form of  -  Du Pré Complete EMI Recordings [Box set, Collector's Edition] at a very reasonable price.

If its music you enjoy I can recommend this set without hesitation.

Peter
