What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

A bit of nu-Prog from 1994. Very Marillion-ish but pleasant.

Onto the pudding - original 1976 ABC-Dunhill pressing, sounding sweeeeeeeeeeet. Inspired by good old Dustysox...

Arrived at Nos. 8, 9 and 10. Amazing... so sincere. A far cry from the cynical, joking-but-not-really, even jealous closet dissident-Soviet that to me characterizes Shostakovich in so many of his public works. I like this side much better, even if the predominant colours are red and black, and the soundscapes are not really giving rise to happy thoughts.

Cheers,

EJ

David Fray's latest Bach disc is a winner, it's been in or near the accuphase since it came out. He does not 'Jaques Loussier' this music but there is a jazzy edge to his interpretations. Great recording quality, too - a far cry from the thin Virgin house sound of old.

Cheers,

EJ

Lupu's Schubert Sonata No.20 D959

Their second album on ACT, as good as their first one.

Franz Schubert: Doric String Quartet

Quartet for Strings no 13 in A minor, D 804/Op. 29 no 1 "Rosamunde"

Quartet for Strings no 14 in D minor, D 810 "Death and the Maiden"

If only they would have practiced walking more uniformly then it would have matched their fine playing.  Still better than some other quartets who are too loose and not serious enough.

Canto Perpetuo:  Boulanger Trio

Episodi e canto perpetuo by Peteris Vasks
Trio for Piano and Strings no 1 in C minor, Op. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich
Trio for Piano and Strings no 2 in E minor, Op. 67 by Dmitri Shostakovich

Learning the E minor trio years ago was one of the highlights of my life and literally introduced or brought me firmly into 20th century music and especially Shostakovich.  I actually like both of Shostakovich's piano trios very much.

My guys & gals still do have more fun too Haim.  While not quite uniform as they could be at least they are all the same height

'Laetatus Sum' - a perfect ostinato in the background.

Highly recommended.

The more I play this one, the better I like it...... This was not my style of music before, so it needs some adoption from my side.
