What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Godsticks - The Envisage Conundrum. Now available from Burning Shed.

First CD played after fitting new HiCap DR to quicken warmup time . Plenty of low frequency material & nice keyboards as well.

Monteverdi's madrigals - basically very good music. There are several excellent CDs; it's amongst the best ones.

Heard The Stereophonics on Radio 2 doing a fine live version,in the studio, of Subterranean Homesick Blues whilst I was driving home from County Durham so I thought I would play my latest copy:

Just saw and the documentary and listened to:

The Waldstein and op.109 from Arrau's last, unfinished, Beethoven sonata cycle. Deeply considered, weighty, and as ever, that gorgeous piano tone, excellently recorded to boot.

Cheers,

Todays rotation includes early 70s Brit folkie Mick Softely-a twofer album with Sunrise/Street Singer.

Here is a sample from Sunrise...Time Machine. Very powerful it is too.

And staying in the folkie vein, here is a great band from Bristol, Folkal Point. Barely teenagers when this was recorded- the guitar player for instance was only 16, and has very good technique. The female singer is eerily similar to a cross between Sandy Denny and Jacqui McShee-really!

Bought this on Friday from Hippie Shake Records ...

... and have now listened to it a couple of times. I have to say I am a bit of disappointed. Not to say that this isnĀ“t a very good record because it is and I am sure I am going to play it a lot. However, the expectations may have been too high (and the general hype has not helped either). At the moment I still prefer the previous one for this - luckily I do not have to choose since I have both .

Simon Rattle in superb performances of Brahms' symphonies. I heard that when members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra heard this recording, they wished they could play it like this...

Annie Fischer in Op.31/3 and the Hammerklavier, from her complete set of Beethoven sonatas. Saw that this box fetches USD 700 now on Amazon... in case you're tempted: it's good but not that good. Superb playing (in the mould, or more accurately, setting the mould for Argerich, Kovacevich, Gulda and others of the mercurial persuasion - with all that this approach stands for, so expect some rushed passages) is offset by sloppy patchwork and inconsistent sound quality. Still, it provides us with a rare glimpse of this legendary pianist.

Cheers,
