What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

One of my best recent purchases which has been played a lot

One complaint though is that this LP version does not include "Dirt" which I noticed only at home (apparently originally when the vinyl was released last summer it was sold as a bundle with CD including that track, unfortunately this went trough my radar back then).

So, somehow, The Cherry Thing, the album that the free-spirited pop star and the impish free jazz ensemble made together, is not the indulgent, impenetrable mess that you might expect; just the opposite, actually. It's a remarkably well-defined, cohesive, and above all things inviting listen, and at eight tracks it feels neither slight nor needlessly sprawling. Consisting almost entirely of covers and concocted from an unpretentious, no-frills sonic palette, The Cherry Thing is an exercise of the freedom you can invent within certain limits. Can you create new sensations from well-worn material? Is anything so sacred that you can't melt it down into jewelry?

Furiously variable in classical/romantic repertoire, this performance exemplifies both the baby and the bath water. Mozart's fugues for string quartet, which open this CD, are brilliant performances. Then, Beethoven's toughest work (IMO), Op.130 opens rather agressively (as usual), then scales back rather nicely as if the Hagens amplify its core unease. That's cool, but as they play softly, they also seem to loose a sense of PRAT. From then on, inspiration comes and goes. Overall, however, the Hagens get more right than wrong and inject some colour and variation into a work that sometimes has the transparency of a brick wall. The quartet is closed with the Grosse Fuge (op.133).

Cheers,

EJ

If no possibility to listen this work on clavichord...

Not romantic way as usual on Richter's Bach-WTC record; rather strict and straight.

Sound quality is a big suprise; very-very living piano. Not a big one with ultra boundaries but a really 'hammer' instrument with great case-resonances.

Carmen Gomes Inc.- SSS no.1

this is in my opinion one of the best sounding audiophile recordings made.

Carmen Gomes Inc's version of I'm on Fire is a master piece.

Her other album on Sound Liaison: "Torn" is a close second.Maybe because "a 1000 shades of Blue"is a live recording it has that exstra vibe?

This is better than I expected -  lean & clean playing with a bouncy rhythm, a bit of rubato but stylishly done. I think as I get used to the subtleties, I might grow to love this record. Hopefully DG will stick with Wunder and Blechacz, with them they have two of the best young pianists out there.

Too bad Wunder's new album is so light weight my CD player refuses to spin it.

Cheers,

EJ

i'm not the best person to comment since I virtually never listen to harpsicord, tonight I just wanted some relaxing music so I thought to give it a try. That's the advantage of having a streaming subscription with Qobuz.

it was pleasant enough but it never will be 'my' instrument.

sorry .....
