What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Love this. A real grower, after several listenings it just begins to get in (if you let it, boom boom). Less immediate than Sky at Night, but just as beautiful.

"The music of Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) immediately attracts our attention with its rhythm, variety of colour, technical brilliance, energy, joy, and spirituality. It is incredibly well written for the instrument, even though its difficulties may deter many a player. Audiences are rarely indifferent to it, and for many it has a very powerful effect. In this disc, Angela Hewitt shows her affinity for French piano music, presenting the early Préludes of Olivier Messiaen, along with several of his Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus and Île de feu 1 and 2."

10 Preludes op. 23

13 Preludes op. 32

Steven Osborne (Piano)

Pictures from an Exhibition, by Modest Mussorgsky

Sarcasms, Op. 17 by Sergei Prokofiev

Visions fugitives, Op. 22 by Sergei Prokofiev

Finally, another complete Visions Fugitives.  Recorded  in December 2011, I'm not sure why it took more than a year to be released.  I had been looking for additions and this is a very welcome disc.

Doug, it was released earlier in Australia, in connection with Steven's performances there.

Symphony #5 from the archives... I haven't listened to this set in years, I've always found it quite boring. However, it may be my mood, but I quite like what I'm hearing now. Recording is a bit fuzzy but the performance shines through.

Osmium presents a different side of Parliament, with a sound unique to any of the P-Funk discography. Here, they tone down Hazel’s giant acid-drenched riffs with Funkadelic (at least somewhat), playing up the vocal stylings of the five singers, by blending in more of a gospel-influenced sound.
