What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Neighbours away. So far this morning all on vinyl:
For a laugh:
Prompted by a conversation with Denis A last night:
Noisy!
Because "Some Distant Memory" is one of the greatest tracks EVER
Doug,
David Fray is going to give a concert at the Chicago Symphony in May playing Mozart (piano concerto #25), Bartok and work of Mason Bates (2006).
Haim,
I've said it before but it bares repeating from time to time. "It's just not fair!" I hope you are taking advantage of some of these opportunities? Of course, this explains why I have to buy so much music....
Doug,
Book a flight [your flights every weekend] and come over!
...it might be cheaper just to move as I'll be there a lot. I'd even go to every Pollini gig too
Sounds like they had a great time together doing this. G
Starting the morning with a very young Grimaud playing Rachmaninov piano sonata no. 2 to calm the nerves before attending the HiFi show later in the day.
Very delicate and especially nice at the beginning in the high registers:
and I also would prefer it over another contender:
Bert,
I have both records which I consider very good, but it is always the Fantasie played energetically by Widmann and Lonquich that draws me deeper into the piece.
Haim
Haim,
Pollini is playing all Chopin program on Apr.21 and all Beethoven Sonata program on May 5th at The Carnegie.

On original 1989 vinyl. Haven't heard this in a decade or more. Still brilliant:

Hi Kevin, good to meet you last night. A pity you couldn't make the Emily Barker gig, where tickets were available at the lovely Hoxton Hall venue. Emily's new material is more 'Electric' overall, with a couple of immediate head nodding tunes. I spoke to Gill Sandell (emily's accordian player) after the gig and she thinks the new album will be out around July, on the Linn label and has had some or all production by Calum Malcolm (Blue Nile Producer).
The bands above, come from areas you like, manchester & bermondsey. If you like them, I'll let you know when they tour and arrange tickets if you are available.

Strange situation; there are two 'L'Arpeggiata' tracks what can be found on Alpha sampler CD only.
Very good music; highly recommended.
"This recording enables listeners to discover the artists that participated in Alpha's adventure. They accepted to record a piece of their own choice. This record is therefore unique in its choice of hitherto unpublished works, while capturing Alpha's spirit."
Sarah McLachlan "The Freedom Sessions"
acoustic versions of songs from "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy"
Newly isolated NDAC sorting this out nicely. G
Stockholm Syndrome "Apollo"
jamband "supergroup" of Jerry Joseph (Jackmormons), Dave Schools (Widespread Panic),
Wally Ingram (David Lindley), Danny Louis (Govt Mule), and Eric MacFadden

Five albums on the go here at the moment.
The Raven is just a fabulous album. This is on continual rotation, even the wife has asked for a copy for her car. Doubt there will be better this year for me.
Henry Fool - Men Singing - Stephen Bennett (from around these parts), Tim Bowness of No-Man fame and others including Phil Manzanera jam away on this excellent instrumental release
Charming new album from Mogwai - a film soundtrack, so laid back and excellent
The greatest comeback of all time (as I read earlier this week), 5 stars. Well it's OK but I think overhyped. Compared to the production and recording of the other albums here, this sounds compressed.
Class new ECM. Great trumpet from the Polish legend with his New York Quartet.
