What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Emily Barker's fabulous band on CD. The new album Dear River is set for a summer release and sounded pretty good on Friday night.

Listen here http://emilybarker.bandcamp.co...bum/almanac-cd-vinyl

....and buy the vinyl to appreciate Daniela Terrazzini's artwork at a bargain price.

Ginastera's piano music performed by Eduardo Delgado.

Took the disc yesterday to AXPONA (Audio Expo North America) and played it on some of the top systems there. Now, at home, giving as much pleasure with my meager set-up.

It was also a good chance to meet again Todd Garfinkle who recorded and produced the album. Volume two has been on hold for ten years since the pianist was never satisfied with the recording of a sonata. Despite the fact that both men reside in California it is more complicated since the music had been recorded in a hall in Japan.

EJ,

What is your impression? We (Kuma was there too) just saw Lewis perform the Schubert 958,959 & 960 sonatas.

On Vinyl.
From Emily's gig at the 'Wonderful & Enchanting' Hoxton Hall on Friday. This is a sublime album.  Also meet up with two of the guys from the forum for an early supper before the gig. Just like to say thanks to you both for a brilliant evening and we must do it again soon.

Take care Graham.

This reminds me I need to start listening to Brahms pieces as I am going to hear them live next month:

  • Brahms  Academic Festival Overture
  • Brahms  Violin Concerto
  • Brahms  Symphony No. 4

Looking forward to hearing Staatskapelle Dresden and Lisa as she's got some what of a mixed reviews.

Lingston Taylor and the Ink album. Beautiful singer-songwriter and some folk influences. Sound quality of the album is also very impressive.

Haim,

I've heard him play the last three sonatas in Rotterdam late last year, and in a program with the fantasie the year before. He changed his view quite a bit since recording them. The two double CDs that were issued recently are better reflecting his playing nowadays: big, loud, extrovert, playing for a large audience, and lots of use of the sustaining pedal. I loved the performances, but they're not the only way to perform Schubert, and on balance, on disc I probably gravitate to the intimate performances. Nevertheless, great disc.

Cheers,

EJ

I like his Beethoven colleection of Sonatas, however for Schubert I prefer to listen to:

and she is also my prefered choice for Mozart...

This forum also sometimes helps to explore something new. Listening to very nice for me new piano music:

She's very good - but with just Uchida you're missing out on one of Schubert's greatest works: the Wandererfantasie D.760. Lewis' performance is astounding, as it was live.
