What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

One of the better Elvis film sound tracks IMO.

EJ,

What is your impression? We (Kuma was there too) just saw Lewis perform the Schubert 958,959 & 960 sonatas.

Haim,

I've heard him play the last three sonatas in Rotterdam late last year, and in a program with the fantasie the year before. He changed his view quite a bit since recording them. The two double CDs that were issued recently are better reflecting his playing nowadays: big, loud, extrovert, playing for a large audience, and lots of use of the sustaining pedal. I loved the performances, but they're not the only way to perform Schubert, and on balance, on disc I probably gravitate to the intimate performances. Nevertheless, great disc.

Cheers,

EJ

I like his Beethoven colleection of Sonatas, however for Schubert I prefer to listen to:

and she is also my prefered choice for Mozart...

EJ and Bert, thanks for responding.

Our Lewis was definitely of the later days. Personally I always prefer an intimate performance, including live ones.

I have Uchida's Mozart sonatas and a very good Schumann disc but none of her Schuberts.

I attended yesterday a Hi Fi show and in one room they were playing piano music of Mozart taken from a Linn disc performed by Gotleib Wallisch which I really liked. Are you familiar with him?:

Sorry Haim - familiar with the music, not with the musician.

Five months since its first spin, this remains a fun little diversion by Tharaud and friends.

Immediate and brilliant sounding relatively low noise pressing. Does not have a warm tonal balance, but the massed strigs narroly escapes distorction and congestions with the right amount of leading edge. Good resoanance and ambienace on the piano tone with sufficient bass authority and clarity.

This is not a romantic rendtion but direct and straight forward from both the orchestra and piano. Clear and crisp but full of up front dynamic expressions and drama without sounding corny. Allthrough the piano and orchestra are working tightly to create a turbulant but rhythmically exhilarating presentation. Andante even does not get a sugar coat treatment. There's something raw and direct about this performance that is appealing straight to the heart.

This is one of my fave from the past. Giving Kleos SL some workout.

"If the late, great James Brown was still alive and looking for a backing band, you'd have to think that one act that would be near the top of his list is British Funk-Soul group the New Mastersounds, which plays that old-school, '70s Funk and Soul as if it never went out of style. "
