What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Schubert: Sonates Pour Piano D 894 & D 959

Posted on: 17 March 2013 by EJS

Quartets 11, 12 and 13. Shostakovich remains sombre and sincere, even with modernism knocking at the door there is no feeling of parody - he uses the new tools to dig deeper into the soul, and as usual with this composer, what comes up isn't nice & shiny.

Cheers,

EJ

La Stupenda in her second Lucia di Lammermoor. She is in good voice and by this time her vocalism had evolved to include some pronunciation (I'm still not a fan). Pav, Milnes and Ghiaurov are so good it hurts. The original CD transfer was quite badly congested, but has been cleaned up nicely in the most recent 24 bit remastering. This is essential for opera fans.

Cheers,

Original early 70s vinyl

Why. Because it is an astounding album. It sounds very different from anything that Carlos had done previously. Caravanserai retains a sense of the psychedelic 'Latin' rock of his first three albums whilst pointing to the fusion direction of later albums like Welcome and Borboletta but not entirely crossing over into jazz..

Based on a recommendation from the Forum a week or so ago (and I apologize but I can't remember who it was; I think I know, but I don't want to slight someone.)

Five of Vivaldi's concertos for bassoon and orchestra, played by Frantisek Herman and the Slowak Chamber Orchestra for Supraphon in 1988. This has become quite an obscure recording, and I'd love to tell you that it is great. But it isn't. In fact, it is really bad. Mr. Herman knows his instrument but his band seems to think this is Brahms, the result ending up as something that would be quite fitting in an Andre Rieu concert.

Very droll. I assume the picture is from the Act 1 masked ball scene.

I recommended Fela to someone recently, but can't remember if it was you or not.

Glad someone else is enjoying him.

Mike Keneally - Wing Beat Fantastic

Getting familiar again with this collaboration with Andy Partridge. Seeing Mike + Godsticks on Wed 20th @ the Borderline. Should be a highly rewarding musical evening.

'Fitzwilliam' Quartet plays Shostakovich - similar when 'Bach' Quartet plays Stockhausen...

Then I realized that name came from 'Fitzwilliam College' and they changed this name.

Bought it after seeing the link below. Initially I hated it apart from the track in the video, but after listening to it a few times apart from a couple of tracks I'm thinking it's rather excellent.

(Don't click the link if offended by nudity. Very artistic with superb lighting, and it's all in the BEST possible taste )
