What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Fabulous SQ on original vinyl : )

Liza Ferschtman in a wonderful performance of Dvorak's quirky work. The recording (I listen to the CD layer) is very good but requires turning up the volume to release orchestral detail.

Cheers,

A couple of discs inroads...

All 103 symphonies, plus alternative versions, plus a couple of unpublished ones - recorded within the span of a few years. You'd think these were recorded by the yard, but that's absolutely not the case! Even the early works are highly varied and it's been just a joy to encounter these works for the first time. I've also sampled some of the London symphonies, and just love how Dorati keeps things from getting stale. His way is unadorned, letting the music speak for itself, and full of life. Tempi are on the whole slower than what we are used to, which I guess can make these performances feel old fashioned. So be it. If I didn't have other versions already, I would not be tempted to go and look for them.

Cheers,

EJ

EJ,

what do you think of the Adam Fischer set on Brilliant classics.

Hi Mark - Don't know the Fisher set. In this case I did not try to compare different versions. Dorati's set is one I've wanted for a long time, but it took me a long time to convince myself that 33 discs wasn't too much of a good thing. I can now say, I'm extremely happy with this box. This particular box also has excellent essays by H.C. Robbins Landon, the musicologist who did much to rehabilitate Haydn's music.

Cheers,

EJ

This gets better with each play. Seeing Mike's band the other night makes you appreciate a musicians creativity even more.
