What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

..not as good as I hoped..., a bit showing off music..

Didn't particularly like this when it came out, but now I'm finding that it's a lot better than I recall, especially 'Onward'.

Hi, Clive.

To what would you attribute your change of heart?  I, for one, find it soulless to extremes?

'The G minor Quartet (No 1) opens simply, with Hamelin shaping the line beautifully but unaffectedly, the Leopold players gradually entering, their playing filled with ardour. The Zigeuner-finale is irresistibly ebullient, with a jaw-dropping ending... The other aspect that is so impressive about these readings is the sense of absolute precision, which lightens the textures and keeps edges crisp... Hamelin and the Leopold get to the heart of the matter in the soulful Poco Adagio and while they in no way lack heft when it's needed, particularly in the opening movement, there's always a dancing quality to their playing which does much to illuminate textures' (Gramophone)

Played it tonight three times in a row.  Feels like a bottomless well, the more I listen to it the deeper it goes. Thanks to Stefan who was kind enough to point out the trace.

2nd disc

Posted on: 27 March 2013 by EJS

A curious combination of a 'traditional' orchestra, albeit led by a HIP-specialist, and a trio on historic instruments. The concerto is played really well and after some acclimatizing to the music box piano, it is a convincing view. Especially in this concerto, a concert grand could sound either overbearing or, when held back to allow the cello to be heard, dull. Not the case, here.

Cheers,

Mark, what do you think of the Harnoncourt / KCO performances? I've had the recordings for over 20 years and still love them. Shame you have to do without the great original cover photos.

I like them a lot compared to the Adam Fischer set on Brilliant classics. Something about Harnoncourt's Interpretation that really draws you into the music. The recording quality is good as well. I also enjoy the following Paris symphonies set.

It's a shame that I don't have the essays that you were talking about in the Dorati set. This is what is usually missing in many boxsets.

Signing off with a bit of John Downland CD 2 - Paul O'Dette

Regards,

Mark
