What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I forgot how wonderful his No.3 was. Might not have a playful attitude on some parts but here he tells a great story in that I don't drift off on the back half of the scores.

Schubert's string quintet, in last year's recording by the Arcanto Quartett. For me, this is the first performance to challenge the hegemony of the Alban Berg Quartett. I'm not sure why most performances fail to tick for me, but I think it's to do with a combination of concentration, a certain raggedness, and a romantic spirit that should allow the music alternatively to cry out quietly and uninhibited. This characterises the Arcanto's performance - a key moment is the introduction of the F minor second theme in II, a sudden cry by the violins leaning on the second cello's gorgeous bass melody. The players really open up, letting go of the strain that was built up in the quiet / disquieting first theme. By the end of the movement, when Schubert briefly brings back the themes of the movement, the ABQ are that much more incisive but the Arcanto's sense of resignation after maybe Schubert's most harrowing movement in all his music, is apt, too. In III., symphonic but simpler in feeling, the Arcanto achieve light and shade and a resonance where the music is usually dispatched in a monochrome fashion. It allows them to make the most of the slow trio later on in the movement (back to plaintive mood, as opposed to a slow march). Technically, the Arcanto are not all that polished but I don't care - might even be the key as neither are the ABQ. Recommended!

Cheers,
