What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

300 years back from dall'Abaco; when 'Low Countries' was the centre of the really good music.

Pure pleasure.

Highly recommended.

The worst album that Yes ever made whilst in their pomp! Dreadful beyond words.

What were they thinking, I wonder?

+1

I Like It

I like it too.  Listened to it last weekend.

Ludwig van Beethoven:  Jonathan Biss (Piano)

Sonata for Piano no 4 in E flat major, Op. 7

Sonata for Piano no 24 in F sharp major, Op. 78

Sonata for Piano no 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 27 no 2 "Moonlight"

Fantasia for Piano in G minor, Op. 77

My initial perception is that I like Volume 2 here much more than I remember liking Volume 1 of this new series.  At any rate I think Biss is headed in the right direction.  I am not one to subscribe to the idea that Beethoven has to sound "thus and so" to match his supposed character.  Same goes with any music from any composer.  I like to hear a range of ideas and what I am opposed to more than anything else is the lack of or absence of original ideas or players whose playing doesn't align with who they are as individuals.  Biss is not an aggressive player like say Kovacevich or similar.  He is more a thinker with a wonderful tone, flow, and clarity of structure.  Overall, this is a nice recording in my opinion.

I agree, Tony.  I knew of Sia from Zero 7 but was prompted to buy this from its exposure on this thread.

First play of 2CD edition. In Todd (I still) Trust!

This special limited deluxe 2 CD digipack collectors edition features an additional CD recorded at a sold-out concert at The Paradiso, Amsterdam on 11th November 2012 featuring Todd Rundgren and the Metropole Orchestra. This stunning performance saw Todd and this fine orchestra perform specially commissioned orchestral arrangements of Todd's classic repertoire and is a unique souvenir of an incredible and unique concert.

Michael Chorney and Dollar General "Dispensation of the Ordinary"

I often find new artists by searching associates of an artist I like. Quality begets quality.

Michael is producer of several of Anais Mitchell's recordings and performs

with AM, as well.  Enjoying this.

Matthew Ryan "Regret Over The Wires"

One of my favorite songwriters, his more recent releases are quite dark, this one a little less so.

"Our cat is sad and withdrawn
The dog just stares at the lawn
None of us are eating
I think they blame me your gone"
