What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Jonathan Plowright (Piano), Szymanowski Quartet

Quartet for Piano and Strings in C minor, Op. 61 by Wladyslaw Zelenski

Quintet for Piano and Strings in G minor, Op. 34 by Juliusz Zarebski

Two Polish composers that unfortunately had the odds set against them.  Juliusz Zarebski (1854-1885) became a close friend of Franz Liszt in Rome and had such promise but died at the age of 31.  Wladyslow Zelenski (1857-1921) mainly held prominent teaching posts but most of his music was either lost or destroyed.

Doug, does the recording sound a bit off balance with the SKI-less Jonathan Plowright?

Frédéric Chopin:  Jean Muller (piano)

Ballade for Piano no 1 in G minor, Op. 23

Ballade for Piano no 2 in F major, Op. 38

Ballade for Piano no 3 in A-flat major, Op. 47

Ballade for Piano no 4 in F minor, Op. 52

Mazurka in A minor, Op. 17, No. 4

Mazurka in C major, Op. 68, No. 1

Mazurka in A minor, Op. 67, No. 4

Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1

Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 69, No. 1

Largo in E-flat major (Posthumous)

Polonaise in F-sharp minor, Op. 44

Luxembourger, Jean Muller, and a fine Chopin recital albeit, and I haven't made up my mind yet, whether he is on the other side of the warmth scale or closer down the middle.

Haim, despite this shortcoming, I think he holds his own here in this company.  Maybe, in the past somewhere, his ancestors might have been Plowrightowski but they got tired of constantly being asked how do you spell that so they shortened it?

Thumpermonkey - Sleep Furiously

One the best albums I've bought recently and the most dynamic (check your rib cage kin loud) bands I've seen as well. I need to buy some attenuating earplugs before I seem them next . I think of this album as the Bonzos meeting King Crimson (Red era).

Bell X1 "Bloodless Coup"

one of my favorite bands, from Ireland, new album on the horizon in May.  for now this will do just fine

Krips' 'Linzer'.

Tempo drops from Lenny's but dancing rhythm and unpretentious. Krips +co. seem to be having a great time with it.

U2 "No Line On The Horizon"

Another little Irish band, Bono and Edge get all the attention but I have always liked the rhythm section laying down some nice grooves.
