What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Chords, for poor Gesualdo to write this music, he probably never recovered from his crimes of passion... EJ

Hewitt is excellent here though she was only my second choice. I was never able to obtain Tharaud's early recordings of Chabrier. Does anyone have  them?

Polish progressive / post rock band Riverside.

Not that well known, but deserve to have far more attention in my opinion.

This is a six disc set of their first four albums.

Their latest - Shrine of New Generation Slaves (Songs) in its special edition guise is also worth investigating.

Loads on You Tube if you care to try. (Elevator Shrine if you can find that ;-) )

Excellent live as well - if a tad loud.

The singer bass player has a very good side project called Lunatic Soul, again well worth digging out.

I can't abide opera (or musicals) normally but, strangely, I like this.

(My copy doesn't have BB scrawled on it!)

Trio Chausson:  Philippe Talec (violin), Antonie Landowski (cello) and Boris de Larochelambert (piano)

Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 3 by Ernest Chausson

Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in A minor by Maurice Ravel

One of my nightcaps, I suppose.  My wrist is sore, I'm tired and it's time for the ease and comfort of letting someone else do the work.  The Chausson Piano Trio in G minor is just such a wonderful work.  The atmosphere it evokes from the start and here and there throughout is nothing short of perfect for me.  So many wonderful moments of sadness or tension it gives me such joy although occasionally Chausson throws in a sprinkle of gaiety or sunshine.  This aspect mostly annoys me.  Contrast this to some of the darker material and the climaxes and I can't get enough.

In my head I have a large repertoire of music from bygone centuries.  I don't think I could ever part with any of it quite frankly but I find that I tend to camp out on my favourite pieces for days, weeks, or even months at a time.  It is not usually complete works that have me but usually a phrase here, a section or even a movement there.  Those special parts that contain all the mystery and those parts that words cannot explain.  It is music that cannot be written in today's world.  It is music that finds such depth in the human soul and journey.
