What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Not a huge fan of Supertramp but this double album is extremely well recorded.

Branford Marsalis - Renaissance.

Fantastic playing and a very long time since I listened to this last. Even the pause to remove a large lump of fluff from the stylus hasn't spoilt the experience.

Puccini's triptych of 1-act operas in an effective modern recording. Tabarro and especially Suor Angelica are simply fantastic; the last opera, Gianni Schicchi, is Puccini's only comic opera, but has a wry sense of humor and isn't my favorite. It does include the famous aria 'O mio babbino caro' (o my dear father), exquisitly sung by Angela Gheorghiu, however.

Cheers,

I should get her Berlioz disc. It contains some Arias of Handel and hopefully they are not part of her disc solely dedicated to him:

Haim, she was an outstanding singer, but her Bach disc and the live recital from Ravinia add a poignancy, you can hear she had seen death up close and that it was coming for her soon, too as well.

EJ,

Unfortunately, I never got a chance to see her live.
