What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Inspired by the recent Soul thread I've been spinning a few of the best;

Would be worth it just for the sublime Giving Up.

This one for the title track - one of Curtis' very best.

BigH47 -

If you happen to have Bad Co on vinyl, how does the CD compilation SQ compare to the Swan Song LPs (which I consider to be very good)?  10 from 6 LP on Atlantic vinyl is cold and lifeless.

Impulse purchased a couple of months ago : (

I couldn’t find a sample listen of this anyway but it looks so interesting; is my excuse.

This is not my first listen but the first time i’ve persevered with playing the whole CD in one go. It’s not as interesting musically as it looks so i can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

Female vocals are pleasant but samey though-out in a weird sort of meditational Monteverdi style, Male vocals far cruder with occasional bellowing. Instrumentals primitive, simple, leaves me wanting [to go forward a few centuries to 1600s perhaps]

All I can say is if this is what the Vikings had for entertainment no wonder they went out on the pillage, plunder and rapping.

Were they really into Rap music?

Joe, I only have Straight Shooter on LP and CD. Vinyl is Atlantic though I'll give them both a listen later, and report back.

I fancied playing something with lots of feedback , vocals you cant hear but with a tune hidden away in the mix if you turn it up loud enough .. this fits the bill

Original 1972 Vinyl

Last of the Red Hot Burritos is one the best live albums in my collection. I recall the late John Peel, playing practically every track of the album on his late-night show. I think he was so impressed that he ditched his playlist.

thanks for the Marianne Muller recommendation, i’ve ordered a copy, and it’s on the way.

Meanwhile I’m sampling tracks [on Spotify-Free] from her Abel/Telemann/JSB CD which does sound exceptionally good imho:

For 1 CD it seems rather expensive at over £16 on amazon/uk

so i will wait a while in hope for a more sensible price.
