What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

For a famous composer, Modest Mussorgsky actually completed very little of his works, certainly the works for which we mostly know him today (Pictures at an Exhibition, Boris Godunov and Khovanschina) were completed by others. In the case of Khovanschina, it was reworked by Rimsky Korsakov and later Stravinsky and Shostakovich, into the version we know today. All this tinkering did not remove the authentic Mussorgsky-stamp, and the result is a fascinating opera, one of the best to come out of Russia. It can easily fall flat in a less than good performance, but this one, taken live in Vienna is a miracle.

Cheers,

EJ

Chrome Dreams II by Neil Young. On HDCD from 2007. To me this is quintessential NY and I think one of his best LPs. I like it more each time I hear it.

This album makes me realise why I use to like EJ. 'Elton John' is a landmark album.
