What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Fabulous dynamics & recording, despite the odd snap and crackle. Did this ever get a decent vinyl re-release?

Not that I am aware of. Maybe they will in the future. The new CD Remaster of this is very good.

Thanks floid,

I didn't think I'd missed a vinyl re-release. I have the 2004 remaster CD, with the extra  'tigers broke free' track. This sounds pretty good to me. Do you know if the 2011 remaster improves on the 2004?

If only other recording artists made the effort to engineer their music with this quality, we wouldn't complain!

Hi Denis

I have the discovery box set and am very pleased with all the cd's. Worth getting, imo these are the best Remasters out there and improve on all previous releases.

Thanks floid, I'll check out the Discovery edition. I already have the 'Oh By The Way' boxset, so I'll compare with that as well.

No doubt Steven Wilson could have some 5.1 fun with FC & Amused To Death

This 80s recording by Wand/NDR is still one of my reference for Beethoven Symphonies. They are wonderfully recorded and exquisitely executed. Very rare that I like all the tunes in Beethoven Cycle by one conductor.

I still need to get to his Bruckner cycle one of these days.

I like the athmosphere during this live-album very much.

Often sounding slower paced and more relaxed than my London Baroque version (harmonia mundi).

The dreamy quality of the larghetto in G minor is particularly satisfying, only impeded by the usual recording room acoustics that produce some reverb with a some brightness that may justify the budget price on the Brilliant Classics label.

I could be persuaded that Pandolfo’s play here is more articulate than Charles Medlam, but recording effects have distanced his performance, and also that of the harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini.

So i find the London Baroque version, albeit with continuo viol player William Hunt and Richard Eggar on the harpsic’, to be far more agreeable, interesting, and enjoyable on the ear, although it has be said; they had the far better recording studio.

A really superb composition from Carl,

i bet his Dad would have been proud with his Wq.88 : )

Still a great album after all these years reminds me of the time I saw them in a marquee in a field with about 100 other souls before they were famous. Excellent gig.
