What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

On HDCD.  Great dynamics and percussion, as you'd expect from PS.  A very soothing sound for a Friday evening.

I love this band...soooo good.

One of the best jazz programs in the entire USA is at UNT.

The 2004 remaster because I'm feeling rhythmic.

Wand is still my bench mark along with Klemperer for Beethoven's No.3.

Better than today's live concert with Edo De Waart( subbing for sick Muti )/CSO. :/

On CD.  What genre to put them in?  Had to consult iTunes.  They say "white-boy funk, hip-hop, country, new wave pop, jazz, college rock, and guitar rock — with a particular delight in the clashes that resulted".  Yeah, I'll go along with that.

I love the Comfort Eagle!

My Cake CD is stored under C.

Wish someone would reissue this in vinyl.

Kuma,

Here's an interesting story - my daughter, who is now at the University of Washington in Seattle, had one of the founding members of Cake teach her freshman English class.  Can't remember the name.

"Prolonging the Magic" is also a fun CD.  You have quite diverse musical tastes.  Good for you!

She just texted me.  His name is Sean Mockfessel.  So that's what he's doing now.  Teaching English composition at UW.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the memory. I was introduced to the music of this band by some students when I was in California in 1976. I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon when I was back in London in 1977. Great stage show with chainsaws and loads of fake blood.

This was a recommendation by Steve J on here last week. The music is fantastic, fabulous piano. The CD production is not the best 'bit loud' and digital sounding.

Graham.

Hi Graham,

If you like this I can recommend '7936 South Rhodes' which is Eddie Boyd with Fleetwood Mac. An original Blue Horizon is expensive but it has been beautifully reissued by Pure Pleasure Records (all analogue) and you can buy it from System Records online for about £20. This is a bargain.

Wake up beats on a lazy Saturday morning.

Shostakovich' preludes & fugues are obviously modeled on Bach, miss out on the old master's ability to transcend the listener, but substitute a bit of good old Russian style banging with echoes of Mussorgsky. The work had been 'appropriated' by Tatyana Nikolaeva but pianists like Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alexander Melnikov and others have done good work. Melnikov is my current favorite, and brings a great imagination as well as great technique. The big issue with this CD issue is the layout. The work almost fits on two CDs but not quite, so there is a 3rd disc that only has two tracks and a couple of minutes of music. The other side is a DVD layer which is also inconvenient...

Cheers,

EJ

Vinyl . double,  gatefold sleeve.

2003, no less adventurous.

"certainly knows a thing or two about sound textures, so, on that level, the album is a treat for the ears as usual "

Just spotted this new album in HMV. Thought I'd give it a try. Never heard of the artist, but it's a really nice CD, and the as a nice sound.

Anyone heard of her before?

Josephine Oniyama - she's from Manchester, 30 years old, this is her debut, released last October or November. I really like this album, especially "What A Day" and "Original Love". Great talent and a great voice.
