What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Doug,

How much time (in years) do you need if you decide to listen to every recording you own?

Posted on: 22 April 2013 by Florestan

Haim,

Since I can't take it with me, my future listening time is booked solid right up until the end

If I wanted a marathon, 500 days straight (720,000 minutes) listening around the clock without a break would do it.

Just think, when dementia sets in, I'll have forgotten about everything except for the music.

Well, as you know, I have so much more time on my hands (and a meager music collection) so I bought  tickets today for Mr. Hamelin's concert in May. You are invited.

While it's true for vinyl that you can't take it with you, I believe digital is now uploadable provided you have it in cloud storage.

Staier's Goldbergs are fantastic, even through itunes. Having listened to the program for two straight weeks, I have become a bit more appreciative of what it can do, and the mini looks the part, but I still think sound is pants (everything sounds same-y, like the menu at McDonalds). Tried Audirvana, Bitperfect, it changes the sound but doesn't make it any less artificial. VLC sounds best, but a bit boomy and not very convenient. I'm sure a seriously good DAC can improve things but also have a sneaking suspicion that USB, async or otherwise, just isn't up to the job.
