What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Guys, Can you please enlighten me - I have never heard of this artist as one of the key players - is this a gem I should buy ?

Sinopoli was at his best in Bruckner. His uncanny ability to lift melodic lines and bed them back in  and his lyrical way with this craggy work are what makes his recording stand out from the pack.

Pletnev is technically an amazing artist, but his recordings have been on and off, hard to predict. This one is certainly one of his best. Note that the man received quite a bit of negative publicity due to his alleged participation in a child porn ring, and although he was acquitted it all sounds pretty suspicious and his rep got a serious dent.

Sonate BWV 1027 in G major

Sonate BWV 1028 in D major

Sonate BWV 1029 in G minor

Suite pour viole de gambe seule (in D minor)

Paolo Pandolfo - viole de gambe ...after N.bertrand, Paris c1700

Rinaldo Alessandrini - clavecin ...Bruce Kennedy, 1991 (d'après Ruckers)

recordings of 1993 & 1994

To my mind the allegro's seem a little pushed and hurried for viola da gamba, but I suppose one intention of this particular slow-fast-slow-fast repertoire is to stimulate the listener into the appreciation of the slower tranquil pasages, that’s how it works for me anyway.

These are wonderfully close and musically engaging recordings, and this equally coming from both instruments.

I am currently listening to a pre release copy of the new Jeffrey Foucault album Cavalcade. God this rocks and possibly some of his best work since his first.

Next up is the original acoustic demos recorded for the album by Jeffrey and David Goodrich
