What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

My first listen while i relax with a head-cold.

It's led very much by the baroque violin which imo lifts the mood.

The charm is there and the recording is very 'Linn' fine, during the Forqueay piece there is some clankiness from the harpsichord [sounds oddly piano-forte like for a short while] but the 3 play very well together as a trio.

Need to listen to this again when i don't feel so tired,

i'll probably like it more on 2nd hearing...

Great LP. I envy you having that one on vinyl, Matt.  Fortunately the HDCD sounds pretty good.

Back when it was released there was very little vinyl being pressed, at least here in the States. You had to grab any titles you wanted right away. The vinyl sounds pretty good too.

Schubert's Trout piano quintet with Clifford Curzon at the helm. Have been dipping in and out of the complete Lieder of Schubert with Moore & Fischer-Dieskau

I like it.

They sound good, too. Sounds better than the album he put out during the 80s.

Ter Linden's first recording of the suites, in the '90s for Harmonia Mundi. I'd hesitate to put this recording in the league of Wispelwey and Queyras, among the excellent modern recordings, but it's notable for Ter Linden's emphasis on melody - all the cello FX are in the service of the music, here (listen to Maisky - on modern cello - for a performance that does not hide but embraces the technical side of these works, to thrilling effect). Ter Linden recorded these works for Brilliant Classics a couple of years ago, looking forward to hear whether he has grown into the music or simply grown older.

Cheers,
