What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Mullova's recorded the partitas for Philips in the early 90s, and that record remains essential listening. Apparently Mullova herself wasn't very happy with them, however, and she re-recorded them, together with the sonatas, some years ago for Onyx. Her playing has become freer, more playful, but also more casual; her earlier austerity had a magic that isn't here anymore.

Cheers,

EJ

Agua De Annique - Air

The first solo album by Anneke Van Giersbergen after leaving The Gathering. Anneke in fine voice with a mixture of Pop/Rock songs. Hearing some these tracks @ The Bordeline last year made you really appreaciate the power & beauty of Anneke's voice.

I love Christa Ludwig as Isolde as well as Klemperer's deft handling of scores here.
I don't know if Klemperer ever conducted the entire opera, but he's really good at it.

For a bright brief while, Cheryl Studer was Deutsche Grammophon's darling and she was offered the chance to record anything - from Wagner and Strauss to Donizetti, Verdi, Mozart, a Christmas album and this recital of Schubert songs. The selection focuses on 'nature' and only includes a very limited number of the greatest hits. Her voice is bright and large, but quite agile and her breath control is admirable - she sings all-out as if these are small operas. Recommended.

Cheers,

EJ

I do have the original, however it has been played so much I'm not sure it would be a good comparision. I will say this MOFI pressing is will done.
