What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

..Schubert..

The Dvorak violin concerto must be among the most recorded obscure classical works. The first 'big' recording of the Dvorak concerto was by Josef Suk and Karel Ancerl heading up the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and since then a number of big names have recorded the work, including Suk himself a couple of times, David Oistrakh, Itzhak Perlman and others. The work has not become well known - recent recordings by Maxim Vengerov, Pamela Frank, Isabelle Faust, Sarah Chang, Julia Fisher and this one have not changed that. The work isn't bad but not great either, quality wise about halfway between Dvorak's piano concerto and his cello concerto.

Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman (1979) has an almost old fashioned warm, big sound that fits the romantics, and she seems much more at home in it than the old masters (the first Suk recording sounds staid by comparison). The Gershwin filler sounds out of place.

Cheers,

EJ

Have a Little Faith - American Music from Copland to Madonna

Bill Frisell is best known as a jazz guitarist, composer and bandleader. The title track of this album is an instrumental cover (as all the songs on the album are) of a John Hiatt song. Bill also covers music by Stephen Foster, Charles Ives, Muddy Waters, Sonny Rollins and Madonna.

Every time I see this album cover, I think the portrait is Todd Rundgren

I hadn't noticed before you pointed it out. Not sure I'll ever see this in the same light again!

By the heck! I saw this lot supporting Black Sabbath in around 1973/4 at the old Liverpool Stadium (not the pit of evil on the other side of Stanley Park). My ears rung for days afterwards - they were as loud as the Sabs!

Kevin,

Todd's hat isn't to big for his head, so I think he would approve .

Vlad,

It's good to see things from other peoples point's of view (interpret as required ), as I discovered at last nights Steve Hackett gig . I was a complete Genesis agnostic, but age must be catching up with me and I think this could be the beginning of an interesting bout of music buying!
