What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Pink Floyd. A Momentary Lapse of Reason. On vinyl from 1987. Gatefold edition with green flame.

I always found this recording to be bass heavy and somewhat sluggish. 1997 CD sounds very similar to the vinyl.

Some good versions of some old songs covering artists such as Lucinda Williams, Don Covay and Al Green.

Bellini's last opera, I Puritani, has a confusing mess of a plot, with a heroine growing crazy not once but three times. Musically, however, it is Bellini's most accomplished and to me his second best, after Norma. This recording, finally re-issued by EMI, is the best out there, thanks to Muti's unifying leadership. His singers are quite good, Caballe and Kraus in excellent voice, but - the only negative of this set - Muti doesn't allow them any of the optional high notes and repeats.

The common recommendation is the second Sutherland set, with Pavarotti, Cappuccilli and Ghiaurov. The men are unbeatable, truly spectacular even, but, crucially, Sutherland sounds bored and Bonynge is no Muti.

Cheers,

EJ

Been listening to some organ music and to my surprise, I like this Anton Heiller's Bach Chorale Preludes.

Some great British Jazz musicians on this 1975 album from Neil Ardley (director synthesizer), Ian Carr (trumpet, flugelhorn) Tony Coe (tenor clarinet bass clarinet), Barbara Thompson (alto soprano flute), Paul Buckmaster (acoustic & electric cello), Bob Bertles (alto soprano flute), Geoff Castle (electric piano synthesizer),Dave Macrae (electric piano synthesizer),Roger Sellers (drums),Ken Shaw (guitar), Brian Smith (tenor, soprano, flute, alto flute), Roger Sutton (electric bass guitar) Trevor Tomkins (percussion ,vibraphone). Produced by Paul Buckmaster.  I fell in love with this album a long time ago and it still stands the test of time. It's simply timeless, great music. Beautiful and life enhancing. My copy is an original but it can be had both on CD & reissue vinyl.

Inspired by the choices earlier of GraemeH:

Although not one of Caravan's 'classic' albums, it's one I failed to buy when I was at school, possibly owing to the mixed reviews. However, this was rectified in 2011 when I found the CD on Amazon and, since it's not one I grew up with, it now appears quite fresh and takes me back and reminds me of my love of Caravan.

For Girls Who Grow Plump next.

UNKLE - End Titles - Stories For Film

I bought this for the 5 tracks featuring Gavin Clark. A poor recording and music not great either, oh well.
