What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I find it best to play one of these CD's a couple of times over, before moving on to the next CD a few days later - otherwise the complexity of the composition tends to wash over me. This is a fab box-set imho but it contains a lot of gritty interesting piano play that needs careful and time-taking consideration.

I have some Angela Hewitt Schumann on the way to me soon which maybe even more stimulating...

This box set is one of a massive retail-therapy blow-out that arrived today (all on CD). Looking forward to listening when I've ripped to the NAS!

Also arrived today is the Hewitt Schumann Piano Sonata No 1 & Humoreske disc, Pires' Chopin Nocturnes and the "Chopin" and "Schubert" discs.

Months of listening!

Hi Debs,

Similar experience it's quite dazzling and needs more time to get into it. Have also Wilhelm Kempff, which is a bit easier to digest in a way (more gentle). But I find this version also very interesting, but as said more difficult to take in. Just recently bought also the Angela Hewitt versions, again different - but also very pleasant. It will take some time to find my favourite versions of the different pieces.

Picking up from the best guitarist thread........ Three examples of wonderful technique and musicality. All from a recent CD blow-out.....

Had this record for ages and finally I was in the mood to give it a listen.

Impressive seismic intro commands the attention straight away.  More accessible and less stand offish than icy Richter. Janis possess both the iron fist control as well as flowing lyricism. Comparatively tho this set does not have the sophistication of Richter/Wislocki but narrowly escapes earning the schmultz status.
