What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Mullova's newest Bach disc (largely repeating the programme of an earlier disc for Philips) is excellent. Where I felt that her recent sonatas and partitas stayed a bit too much on the surface, her energetic, warm and fluid approach is much better suited to the violin concertos.

Cheers,

EJ

On vinyl. Inspired by the film "A Late Quartet" we just watched.

Please note that his early records - with directed Les Arts Florissants - are well-listenable nowadays too; it's not usual in Early Music.

Revisiting Beethoven's Late Sonatas.

The B-52s. Time Capsule. An early HDCD from 1998. Vintage Fender sounds innovatively merged into New Wave. Crisp, lively, and full of energy.  Good Stuff!

I have spent too much time in my life, and too much money, hunting down a really perfect (to my ears) version of No. 30. Especially the last movement. The versions I have range from the too heartless Pollini to the too slow Arrau, and include many stations in between. At the moment I'm most content with, surprisingly maybe, Helene Grimaud. Any suggestions would be appreciated
