What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Cruisin' for Bluesin' - Ray Bailey

Purchased today from my local 2nd hand dealer. In near MINT condition. Plays like a new copy (Better than some new vinyl recently purchased!) Reminds me of the Tom Scott film The Hunger listening to Bela Lugosi's Dead. Great film.

Not a jazz fan but this compilation may just make me one. The John Scofield 3 Natures is just sublime beauty as is Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny The Precious Jewel.  Just a great compilation.

Great music for a late spring day afternoon when the air is warm, the sun bright and a light breeze blowing.  Perfect for lazing and having a beer or glass of wine and just relaxing.

Wonderful sounding original DGG pressing.
I love Kempff's Late Sonatas. They feel just right from the first note.

How's the sound, Kuma? All CD issues so far suffer from a grand that sounds more like a small upright. To me the technical sound quality pushes too much of Kempff's artistry into the realm of blandness.

A comparison of recent '27's. Both very good (the more I hear the Pires, the more I prefer her 27 to the more famous 20 that follows it). Funny that when I compared Pires with Uchida's newer CLeveland recordings I found Pires to more subtle performer; on the other hand, Hewitt is more subtle still (within an overtly lyrical canvass) to the point where she starts to resemble the earlier Uchida / Tate style. Hewitt asserts more of her own personality on the music than the young Uchida, though.

Cheers,

EJ
