What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I don't find them *bland* at all. In fact it has a lot of colours, subtle inflections and textures that keep me interested all the way through. His unassuming style gives a fresh spontaneous liveliness.

Kuma,

Don't disagree with you there, his Beethoven is a work of art; but listen to his Schumann for a taste of how the sound should have been. Kempff was not a man of the grand gesture and the pounding left hand, obviously, but he cultured a sound that was evidently hard to capture on tape.

Cheers,

And talking about culturing sound... to me, I've never heard anybody, live or recorded, with such a beautiful sound as Ivo Pogorelich. And this time, DG did step up to the challenge.

Cheers,

EJ

Heard this one on Amazon or Spotify and bought it as it smashed me in the corner. At home it turned out to be less great than I exxpected, but still somehow a special setting. Enjoy...

I think this is a peculiarity more strictly for the lovers of the viola da gamba - rather than JSB’s Six Suites, which [imho] don’t always allow the viola to perform to it’s quaintest ability, and perhaps try to force it to do something it didn’t ought to.

Although, I would think JSB considered the viols as recent historical hardware that are only useful on occasion, and looked upon the cello as the real deal present and future.

Pandolfo play is exceptional, i enjoyed most of it.

Don’t give up on it, Bert. It may grow on you : )

..one of my popular disks recently..

Another library loan CD

The album is strong from beginning to end, and the placement of the tranquil "Lightning Song" after the heaviest track on the album ("Tension Head") is a slice of genious. It is an album like no other, and Josh and his various musical guests (he seems to have an open door policy, working with countless musicians under the name Queens Of The Stone Age) will have a hard time matching it. It fulfills Josh's dream of letting sex bleed into the music, and will continue to get people jumping and dancing for years to come.

Pandolfo tries to wake up this little-bit-plastic music;

mediterranien approach meets Germay-grey view - interesting project; I almost like.

Please remember that rate of overtones of chello and viola de gamba is minimum 1:50...not gentleman-like comparsion.

This is funny, have this one on right now......it didn't play correctly in the car - so I wanted to check if the error also would occur on the CDX2...of course it didn't but then stayed on listening to this one...
