What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

EJ,

I only have ONE Kempff on Schumann! ( '73 recording of Kresleriana: 2530 317 ) If I recall this was a well-balanced decent pressing.

Which Schumann/Kempff record are you referring to?

Kempff recorded many of Schumann's early works for DG around that time, they must have been amongst his final recordings for the yellow label. On some of the works - including Kreisleriana - he sounds a bit stiffer than he used to be, but the set is amongst the best collections of Schumann IMO. The recordings have always been in print, recently as part of collector's editions

Cheers,

Original vinyl

This is a superb album, produced Todd Rundgren. It mixes original material and covers of songs by Donovan and George Harrison. The music and musicianship are of the very highest order with "Lunar Musick Suite" the standout track IMO.

Live at the Lighthouse - Grant Green

I just got some new speakers and I'm putting them through their paces with this. It's great, chilled out early 70's jazz/funk. "Walk in the Night" which I'm listening to now is particularly groovy.

It's a stunner in every respect.

"Ok, this not jazz, as it was written several centuries before jazz was invented, but it is a truly amazing recording nevertheless. Masterly interpretation of Luys de Narvaez “Seis libros del Delphín” by Argentine guitarist Pablo Marquez for the ECM label. Marquez got to choose 17 of the more than 40 pieces included in the “Seys libros” compendium. Originally published in 1538, the pices were composed for the vihuela, a predecessor of the modern guitar. Here Marquez skillfully demonstrates how rewarding these pieces can be even in a modern instrument. This impecable performance preserves the intimate, introspective character of the pieces. Timeless, beautiful music of a mystical nature. Pablo Marquez was born in the northwest of Argentina in 1967. He has played with bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi, cellist Anja Lechner, the Rosamunde Quartett and the Ensemble Alma Viva."
