What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Absolute winner of theese days.

Friends shocked - me too.

Sound quality is one of the best I've ever heard from CD disc.

Never-heard-before rhytm and  ornamentation.

Well-done, Glossa!

Highly recommended.

Leoncavallo is primarily known as the writer/composer of Pagliacci, but he wrote another nine operas - none of which held repertoire. Medici was written the year after Pagliacci, in 1893. It's a historic opera in the style of Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, and deals with a conspiracy against the Medici family. I think only one recording exists, and fortunately it's a cracker of a performance.

Cheers,

Gosh! i didn’t know she’d actually passed away…

Sophie Watillon (7 December 1965 – 31 August 2005)

Died aged only 39 due to cancer, so very tragic at the age.

What a pleasure that the crew  likes it.

My favourite Marais-Folia on it - seems they are really folly at the end of track No. 7.

Go for her viola bastarda disc - a miracle.

Handel's sixth opera and first masterpiece, Agrippina, is also Handel's best pastiche: not much music was originally written for this opera. It's claim to fame is the rather good, and still (darkly) funny, text - which completely avoids the moral-preaching that became the norm in post-Monteverdi Italian opera. Brilliant performance and recording, too.
