What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Had to play Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No 2 three times in a row before letting go of the disc.

Highly recommended. Doug, thanks again.

Polar opposite in style but I equally like Francescatti's sweet and rhythmic approach. Ormandy's gentle orchestration makes a perfect foil.

Golden Earring. Moontan. On vinyl from 1973. Because my son asked me if Golden Earring had any good songs other than Radar Love. I sat him down and we listened to this together. Now he can answer that question himself.

Out on 27th Aug. Some great trax but some I still can't get into.

I think someone in their org made a mistake and put the whole album up on their web site for listening to a few weeks back (luckily I got a copy) and now I can't find either their web site or much info on the album. Possible remix or different track listing who knows.

Canadian rock band that one Juno award for their music. Not sure if I really like this.

On Vinyl

Think Ian Anderson and Grace Slick joining forces with Black Sabbath

OK, Stills has me intrigued. He likes his trios, huh? But the Rides' promos bill this as a "supergroup". Tough hype to live up to.

Track number '9' - a variations on 'Las Vacas'.

Volume is 11 o'clock position.

Outstanding bass line.

SBL's profile after this track...

have you ever done a spectral analysis of the tracks on this CD?

i'm not very well educated to interpret these, but the do look very different to spectrums from other discs.

i wonder if some loudness has been added and an overall limit has been applied.

the dynamic range of 10 is not very bad, but not particularly good either.

The original version or the revised one?

Which over recordings you would recommend on Rachmaniniffs Sonata #2?

Fantastic performances of Schubert's arpeggione sonata, and transcriptions of two works for violin and piano (and I believe particularly the fantasia works much better in this format). On guts and fortepiano.

Cheers,
