What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Doors. Soft Parade on HDCD. Great sound quality. Some hard core Doors fans are critical of this LP, but I think it's full of fun.

Question I often get asked on here. I unfortunately am one of those guys that plays tracks rather than whole albums unless I am in the mood or have to. If I actually listed what I have played this morning since 5.30 it would take up about 4 pages on here.

Some of the tracks are on HDD and most are on discs.

Some of the discs will be for listening to decide whether they will be put aside for one of my famous 6 monthly clearouts where I sell stuff ultra cheap or give away free depending on how I feel so in that sense it will almost be like a final farewell for them.

Many of Nikolai Demidenko's early discs for Hyperion were extraordinary; perfectly judged natural playing coupled with an enormous range colours and dynamics that include velvet strokes, hammer blows and every grade in between.

On Vinyl

I have been waiting  a year for this debut album to come out and it doesn't disappoint.

Must have listened to it a least twice a day for the last week

Weber's piano quartet (recently also recorded by Isabelle Faust and co) as well as an usual trio, which substitutes a violin for the flute. The works show flashes of inspiration, the performances are very good (and highly charged; this is as exciting as these works can be made to sound). Not essential, but fun to listen to occasionally.

Cheers,

EJ

A collection of pieces by Western composers attempting to explore the subject of China musically as well as culturally. Jenny Lin is astounding in her theme recital. A 2000 BIS recording.
