What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Anyway, links:

Schubert, Symphony Number Nine, The "Great C Major," from Otto Klemperer and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London from about 1960.
No detail passed unobserved, no detail allowed to obscure the architectural shape, and nothing allowed to impede the massive emotional significance of Schubert's symphonic tribute to his hero Beethoven.
Not everyone loves the the Great C Major, but I'd say it is a symphony to rank beside anything from Beethoven, Brahms, or even the greatest symphonist of all, Joseph Haydn.
Even Mozart would have been proud of it, and his symphonies also reach the heights.
ATB from George

My first listenings to both : )
From my musically untrained perspective, this LvB of Hélène Couvert sounds strangely unfamiliar to me, interesting but hard work with moody damped and complicated passages.
Angela Hewitt sounds deeply engaging from the start, far easier to follow the tunes, and altogether more enjoyable.
Debs
Debs,
Your interesting post is causing me to do two things.
First, pull out the Hewitt Beethoven Piano Sonatas discs today and have a listen after many years. From memory, I recall finding her Beethoven Cello Sonatas discs to be among the best of that genre but do not remember being overly excited by the Piano Sonatas. But that was then and this is now and a fresh listen after years will always offer a new perspective (and why I never part with any disc even if I may not be initially impressed). Time often changes everything.
Second, investigate more about Hélène Couvert, a pianist I am not familiar with. Initial look piqued my interest and it looks like she has a few more discs than just the Beethoven I'd be interested in getting.
By the way, if you donate to charity any of your unwanted vinyl and/or cd's, I do offer a service through my charity (me, that is) that accepts these unwanted gems and gives them a loving home where they are cared for
Cheers,
Doug

Thumpermonkey are a fabulous live band. On Thursday night they performed a longer version of '419', that was as sublime as it was brutal. Although having an interest in things 'Aztec', rather than speaking in Larks Tongues, the band have King Crimson attributes in their DNA.

Which CD version? The original analogue transfer sounds fabulous. Later remasters sound predictably ****ed-up.
