What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

There is a famous Pachelbel's Canon on it; the ordinary version as you know I think:

And the real Canon  (Savall):

Be careful; not the same music.

Band on the Run. Paul McCartney and Wings. On vinyl from 1973. Lots of crackles on this one from lots and lots of use. Just adds to the warmth for me.

Band on the Run

...from Wiki:

The cover photo was taken on 28 October 1973 by photographer Clive Arrowsmith against the gable end wall of the stable block in Gunnersbury Park. It depicts the now iconic view of Paul, Linda and Denny plus six other well-known people dressed as convicts caught in the spotlight of a prison searchlight. They are:

  • Michael Parkinson (chat-show host and journalist)
  • Kenny Lynch (actor, comedian and singer)
  • James Coburn (actor)
  • Clement Freud (columnist, gourmet, raconteur, Member of Parliament, Just a Minute panellist and grandson of Sigmund)
  • Christopher Lee (actor)
  • John Conteh (Liverpool boxer who later became World Light-Heavyweight champion)

References to the cover were to be made later by McCartney himself (in the video for "Spies Like Us", along with Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd) as well as others.

The 25th Anniversary edition box set (1999) is nicely presented. It includes the original Band on the Run album remastered on CD, a mini poster, a booklet, and a second CD with rehearsals, outtakes, and interviews with those on the cover.

Dustin Hoffman also has interesting comments regarding his role in challenging McCartney to put "Picasso's Last Words" to song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ9iNYzDIb0

I used to have an early pressing copy of Band on the Run in my original LP collection. *

It was a good copy, no surface noise, excellent SQ, i really enjoyed it : )

* The the collection i regret selling 20 years ago...

Debs,

Amazing how the vinyl and its cover/inner contents represents a real physical connection to the past.....a time, a place, an event, ....even smells. Would anyone regret "selling" a FLAC file? What provenance does that hold?

The famous 'Consonance Stravagante'; came from Naples; nobody knows the real composer.

Strange and strong harmonies.

Matt - how would you describe this, compared to say Shawn Colvin? - who she has dueted with.

I've not heard any solo MCC.
