What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I've not heard any solo MCC.

While they both are singer-songwriters, at the time this album came out MCC was much more pop/country than her later work and sold a ton of records. Shawn Colvin is a bit more folk. My opinion of course. I have seen both in the last year and half. Shawn Colvin was solo. MCC brought a really good band. Both shows were great albeit in different ways.

Mary and Shawn have frequently played together in the past and are currently on tour playing as a duet in the US.

More sensual than Bernstein but percussive elements are entirely missing. So it kind of misses the whole point of the tune. It's a better fit for the soundtrack for the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

I would recommend the 1967 version by Stravinsky himself and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra as the 'best' one:

This SACD version has terrific sound quality as well.

Aleg,

I had a sneaking suspitions his Sacre would be rather good. My favourite Firebird is Stravinsky's conducting his own. No frills but he plays the score through with maximum impact and dynamic expressions.

Does the SACD you recomend can be played on a Naim CD player?
I am on a hunt for the mint 6 eye Columbia vinyl.

..different from all he has done before, but still interesting..

I'm sorry about that, but it is a single layer disc, so only SACD-layer and no CD-layer, and cannot be played on a CD-player.

The 'problem' with this Stravinsky's-own-performance-from-the-sixties is that mastering of the CD's is of changing quality.

I haven't heared the version you're looking for on vinyl, it is available on hybrid SACD however (so SACD and CD layers). It is also produced by John McClure (as is my SACD) so could be (nearly) as good as mine .

I missed them when they played about an hour and a half away in western Massachusetts earlier this month. I somehow heard about it a couple of days after the fact.

Arrived in the post this morning a gift from my father in law

Heavy riff driven blues with gruff vocals and pounding drums.

Goldfrapp's "Seventh Tree" on vinyl. I had forgotten how stunning this record is. Was there a better LP released in 2008? I don't think there was...

I have a recording of a show of theirs where Shawn is lets say has had too much sauce. Slurrying words etc.
