What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

The 'problem' with this Stravinsky's-own-performance-from-the-sixties is that mastering of the CD's is of changing quality.

I haven't heared the version you're looking for on vinyl, it is available on hybrid SACD however (so SACD and CD layers). It is also produced by John McClure (as is my SACD) so could be (nearly) as good as mine .

Aleg,

A quick Google search turned up a new Sony Rite of Spring 100th anniversary box set. I guess today ( May 29th ) was the infamous premier of the Le Sacre 100 years ago!

I've ordered it as this set covers both Stravinsky's 60s and 40s performance. This is just a CD but if it's done well, it can sound better than Hybrid SACDs when played on a non SACD player.

Excellent production value, packaging, production and I even like this album! ( IMHO, they haven't done anything worthwhile since the Discovery )

Aleg,

Sure thing.

I haven't heard any of these recordings but I see there are some odd balls ( at least I think ) to be considered as the *reference* recordings.

Tilson Thomas and Ozawa don't strike me as rhythmic champs and somewhat middle of the road for instance... well will see. Never say never I suppose.

Start of the summer CD. I think this is appropriate now since there has been a couple of nice sunny days this week.

(although I am still missing that convertible and the girls that come with it ...)

..2nd spin, 1st song is a bit more edgy, but grows on you when you listen to it more...rest still very good output - so very enjoyable. Are they still the best trio.....? I think Brad Mehldau's trio is currently the more engaging trio in the scene.....but then we all get older :-)
