What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Daniel Barenboim was 25 when EMI asked him to record a complete Beethoven cycle.

The result is a young guy's Beethoven - uneven, temperamental, prone to flashes of excess. Tempi vary from extreme slow to quite fast, and if I'm really nitpicking, he doesn't stand out in terms of tonal beauty or technical pianism (some slurred runs, ugly sounds under forte...). But there's emotion, gravitas, and buckets of energy in these performances, and a connection with the music. He's very different from Arrau, but both lavish the same care about each note and every bar.

The early 60s sound is not brilliant; rather coarse but it captures the dynamic range well and like the performances, this isn't fine dining but more of a brown cafe wholesome meal, which nevertheless tastes really good. One of my favourite Beethoven sets.

Cheers,

EJ

An 'audiophile' record; NorthWest's booklet says that Nagra/Dcs904/Sonodore/etc...; really good record with a nice musical selection on it.

Wonderful-sounded 3 instruments; a virginal and two clavichords; original ones

Highly recommended.

Please note that any Alpha delivers this sound-quality...

 I think it's quite strange.

I'm not familiar with the Ruckers disc above, but whole-heatedly agree with the observation on Alpha discs (and the related Phi CD's). Right artist, right venue, right engineers, right attitude to recording?

Hard Cash - Various Artists. A soundtrack from a TV series with the cream of English folk. A much loved slab of vinyl.

Made a little 'revolution' in Early Music; here is some words about the recording:

"...I know that there are many people who are going to start trembling only to think about this concept – early music plus recording studio – and many times they get into this state because they believe that it is more authentic to record in churches. I say that that is completely false, starting off with the fact that merely the act of recording in itself is a wonderful lie and I believe that one has to have certain notions about this glorious music and be able to use the techniques for one’s own ends. In my opinion the sound of this CD is better than all the others that we have made previously and I feel very proud about that."
