What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Rimsky's version is no longer very popular but fact is, the work's greatest performance on records happens to be this version. It has Christoff in all three bass roles, which is a bit of an oddity but there's no arguing with his Boris.

tit·u·lar   - Holding or constituting a purely formal position or title without any real authority: "the queen is titular head of the Church of England".

Hardly describes the role of Godunov; he was in essence the real leader of Russia during the reign of Fyodor I (son of Ivan the Terrible), who was both physically frail and rather dim-witted (which is why Ivan had appointed Godunov as his guardian), and was elected Tsar in 1598 until his death in 1605.  He was a rather effective and capable ruler, and effected a number of reforms not seen in Russia until that time.

After a hard week at work within a noisy machinory environment and putting up with colleagues head-banging boomy music it's nice to get home for the week-end and relax to a peaceful piano sound : )

Definition of TITULAR

1a: existing in title only; especially : bearing a title derived from a defunct ecclesiastical jurisdiction (as an episcopal see) <a titular bishop>

1b: having the title and usually the honors belonging to an office or dignity without the duties, functions, or responsibilities <the titular head of a political party>

2: bearing a title

3: of, relating to, or constituting a title <the titular hero of the play>

Mark, I was referring to meaning 3) so surely I used titular in the right sense? My bad in case I didn't.

On the black stuff - wonderful. Don't make 'em like they used to!

Also 50p purchase of Caballe and Domingo (2 x LP set) from charity shop. Looks crocked from the box but vinyl appears in good nick and a good challenge for the RCM.

No worries EJ  -  I should have considered other definitions of the term - but it's always fun to have info on the forum, so at least we sparked a discussion, and you evaluation of the music was very informative!
